As an avid fan of all things nerdy, one of the best things about living in Cardiff is the proximity of the one and only DR WHO EXPERIENCE in Cardiff Bay.. Which surprisingly, I have only visited once so far this year, post-exams. It was awesome. Also, if you put off booking tickets and go to the front desk on the day, you get student tickets, which although not cheap are definitely worth it if you enjoy Dr Who (it’s a better discount than on online too!). So a weekday in term time is the perfect time to visit and fangirl over costume design and all the monsters upstairs without hundreds of people also milling around. The walk-through experience is cool, and includes things to make you jump… Like the Weeping Angels (which are frankly one of the creepiest and most terrifying monsters I have witnessed on Dr Who).
The other truly great thing to do in Cardiff Bay is to visit Techniquest, especially once a month on a Thursday evening. The Afterhours event’s fantastic fun and really good value- only £3 for the evening and you can spend as long as you want (okay, so it closes at 10pm and opens at 7, but you can spend three hours there) playing with the exhibits and doing Science-y Things, which as a Physicist is amazingly cool fun. There’s also a bar and they have different activities every month which you can pay for as extras, but it’s just pretty cool to run round pretending you’re 5 again ;)
A minor downside is that the Bay is a short (about two minutes) train ride from Cardiff Queen Street. Although technically one could walk, it’s easier (sort of) to get the train..
If my amazing albeit brief review of the fun things you can do in Cardiff Bay has made you want more information, try looking here for the Dr Who Experience, and for the After Hours thing at Techniquest, follow them on Twitter or try their website. Enjoy exploring!
