Grumblings of a Welshman

With the clocks having gone back and the first frost on the ground Autumn is well and truly here. But that’s no reason to go into hibernation if you’re a Welshman, as November signals the start of  the autumn rugby internationals.

Each  year Cardiff’ millennium Stadium hosts the rugby giants of the Southern Hemisphere over 4 weeks in what is always an extravaganza of explosive and exiting sport. As current Six Nations Grand Slam Champions and with our side bursting at the seams with future lions, expectations were running high that we would beat Argentina , Samoa and Australia and maybe just maybe, give the mighty All Blacks a big scare this autumn…

Of course as a Welshman it is always foolish to “count your chickens” as just when we thought we might be finally be able to mix it with the big boys of World Rugby, we decide to lose our first two games against Argentina and Samoa. Both sides completely out played us and fully deserved their victories whilst we looked abject of ideas, fizz and passion which are all part of the red jersey.

Poor performances on the rugby pitch by the “boys” is one sure-fire way to make most normally very happy Welshmen a little bit grumpy – and with the prospect of our next opposition being the All Blacks things don’t look like getting better any time soon.  So if you see a Welshman looking a bit sad next saturday give him a hug,  maybe buy him a pint or just tell him everything will be alright!
